Vastu Shastra - Ancient Art and Science of Indian Architecture

Vaastu shastra, an ancient art and science of Indian architecture, explains the practices of constructing buildings which ensures a harmony between man and the five elements and thereby bring all round peace, health, wealth and prosperity. Vaastu Shastra is a Sanskrit name, where ‘vaastu’ means nature, surrounding or environment, and ‘shastra’ means science. Vaastu Shastra evolved during Vedic times in India. Excerpted from the Stapatya Veda, a part of the Atharva Veda. It is believed that Mayan, the great architect of ancient India, was the author of Vaastu Shastra.

Vastu study acquires a complete command over the knowledge of directions. As per Vaasthu shashtra rules, the point at which two different directions meet, it is more powerful, as it combines the forces coming from two distinctive directions. Vastu shashtra is the scientific study of directions that takes into consideration that everything in the universe is constructed by the five elements called Panchamabhoota (earth, water, fire, air and space) and that gravitational and magnetic effects and rotational influences of planets and other celestial bodies with cosmic rays, affects us and controls the way we live.

Vaastu as the actual physical manifestation of the dwelling is categorized into four

Bhoomi – the dwelling place or the main structural ground
Prasada – the structures on the earth
Yaana – movable objects like vehicles, etc.
Sayana – furniture

These categories suggests that the principles of Vaastu Shastra extend from property selection, planning and orientation to zonal segmentation and disposition of rooms, proportional relationships between the various parts of buildings and the character of buildings. Vaastu considered as a science forms the basis of each construction and experts who deal with it recommend that it has to be followed from the initial level of choosing a plot, construction of the house, interior decoration to the final stage of relocating to the house.

The principles of Vaastu are derived from Vaastu Purush Mandala; a man lying with his head-pointing North-East, in a grid of 64 squares dedicated to different Gods. Vaastu Purusha is present in each and every plot whether it is big or small. He has a fixed and peculiar body.

Vastu Shastra - Ancient Art and Science of Indian Architecture

According to Vaastu Shastra, after we have a selected a plot/ house we have to consider its Vaastu Purusha Mandala. Vaastu Purusha Mandala is the basic model on which the house is based. ‘Vaastu’ means environment, ‘Purush’ means energy, ‘Mandala’ means the astrological chart which relates the layout to the orientation. Just like the earth with its magnetic field is centered to its core, the plot should have everything epic centered to it, in the concept of Vaastu Purush Mandala. We should consider the plot and all the items in it having a mystic power, like the earth, items within the earth and its planets.

Today, Vaastu Shastra is looked upon as a highly evolved, building philosophy in which directions and shapes are the most vital aspects of designing. The four directions of the plot are decided, based on the epic centre of the plot.

The history of Vastu

The Indian civilization is the oldest in the world and has a rich heritage of developing different branches of science. Vastu Shastra is one such discipline that developed over the years based on the traditional knowledge gained from studying the nature. The age old Indian philosophers knew a lot about the five elements that made the universe.

They also had knowledge about the gravitational field, magnetic field, the position of the earth, velocity of the winds, ultraviolet rays, the intensity and volume of rainfall etc. Application of this knowledge certainly made sure that the construction of the house was scientific and spiritual at the same time. This is knowledge that people have garnered through years and years of study and test as well.

The five elements of Vastu Shastra

There are five elements that are really important in Vastu Shastra. These are-

  1. Earth
  2. Water
  3. Fire
  4. Air
  5. Space

According to the traditional knowledge, the entire universe around us is made up of these five basic elements. In fact, the five elements of the nature have to be coordinated with the five elements of the human body as well. This coordination is critical as this is what makes human relationship harmonious. Knowledge of the elements can really make it beneficial for people to know more about Vastu Shastra and also help them realize the reason why they have to make certain changes in the house or put certain things in certain places.

The elements can determine the way particular directions interact with particular objects or certain kinds of people. It would be bad for a fire sign to set up an office in the corner that represents the water corner. These little details of Vastu is not just based on the directions and the elements of the nature, but a little on the personality of the dweller, or at least the element that the person was born into.

Directions in Vastu Shastra

Other than the elements, the directions in Vastu Shastra are the most important factor of this ancient practice. When constructing a house, making sure that everything is in the right corner is of utmost importance and this is why it is necessary for people to know all about this. Here are the eight directions in Vastu Shastra and their specific characteristics:

  1. East: East stands for sunrise, or new beginnings. It is very advantageous for people who are trying to end something bad and getting started with something new. It is the direction of prosperity. Here are the things in the house that can be in the eastern part of the house or face the eastern direction:
    • The entrances to the house, living room, study and the place of worship should face the east.
    • Treasure boxes, lockers etc. should open towards the east to promote prosperity.
    • No kitchen or toilet should be in the east.
    • East direction should not be in a more elevated range than the west, south west and the North West directions.
Vastu Shastra - Ancient Art and Science of Indian Architecture
  2. West: West, is probably the most pitiable direction. Out of all the Vastu directions, this is the one that has more instructions for ‘don’ts’ than ‘dos’. People who live in the western part of the house or have entrances opening to the west direction do not lead a happy life or a prosperous one. The western direction is the direction for women; however, even then the success of the woman will not be complete or really big. The west is the direction where the sun sets, which means that this direction is not really good for beginnings. There are the things that one needs to be aware of about the western direction:
    • It is better to have a staircase or a tank in the west than anything else.
    • One could consider having an office here, as a second choice of offices, especially within the house.
    • Store the garbage bins or build the garage in the western direction of the house.
  3. North: North is the direction that is best for the business people who are interested in applying some Vastu in their lives. The planet that rules over this direction is mercury, which makes it really beneficial for people to have offices in this direction. In fact, it has been found that the UV rays cast by the sun have the least negative effect in the northern parts, so having any open space in the northern area would be a good move. The north is really auspicious and the following steps have to be taken care of when one is trying to take advantage of Vastu for better life.
    • Have the office in the north part of the house or the building for maximum success.
    • It is better if there is a slope or elevation on the north side.
    • Keep construction in the north to the minimum, so as to maintain the efficiency at highest. If there are perennial constructions in the north, prosperity will certainly vanish.
    • Do not have any toilets or garbage bins in the north.
    • Do not put any staircases in the north, for it can promote financial loss in one’s life.
    • Do not keep the kitchen in the northern part of the house either.
  4. South: The south is quite a contradictory direction. There is some fear among those who follow Vastu Shastra about this direction. This is because of the fact that there are mixed feelings about whether this direction works for people or not. Say, if one builds a house with a south facing entrance, they might be successful for the first few years, but after that the money will begin to stagnate and eventually start decreasing. Hence, it is better to use the south direction in cycles, so as to keep all the bad luck far away.
    • Keep the south direction portion elevated compared to the rest of the house.
    • Try keeping a tank or an overhead tank in the south portion.
    • Put the staircase to the house in the southern part.
    • Do not put a basement in the south direction.
    • The kitchen and dining room should not be in this direction.

  5. North-East: North-east is the direction of god. It is the most auspicious one and it is known to promote positive aspects in men and women. When taking care of the northern corner or side of the structure, remember the following details to take advantage of Vastu:
    • Open spaces in the north-eastern direction is a good idea.
    • Having a slope in the north-eastern area would be a smart step.
    • Try having a street outside the entrance, especially if the entrance is in the north-east.
  6. North-West: The north-west is the direction that handles interpersonal relationships. The kind of relationships people have with the other members of the family certainly depends on the same. Here are a few things that you would certainly have to keep in mind:
    • There should be no underground water tank in the north- west part of the house.
    • The kitchen, the dining room and the master bedroom should certainly not be in this direction.
    • No extensions should be made from this direction.
    • Avoid having a basement in the north-western part of your house.
  7. South-East: South-east is the direction of the logical and reasoning person. Here are some of the important things you need to know about this direction:
    • It is very beneficial to have the kitchen in this direction.
    • Any electrical instruments, like TVs, motors, batteries, inverters, home theatre, etc. should be placed on the south- eastern side of the room.
    • Do not have a toilet or a tank in this direction.
  8. South-West: This is the direction of the demons, the opposite of north-east. As a result of this, it can command the business field and the decisions made in that field. Here are some important things for you to keep in mind:
    • Rent out the place in the south-west part of your house.
    • Do not have any overhead tanks or basements in the south west for it promotes discord.

These are the basics that you need to know about Vastu Shastra. Now, you will certainly be able to attract the positive energy you want!

History of Vastu Shastra

Vastu Shastra (or short just Vastu) is the Indian science of space and architecture and how we may create spaces and environment that supports physical & spiritual health and prosperity.

Vastu Shastra evolved during Vedic times in India. The concept of Vastu Shastra was transferred to Tibet, South East Asia and finally to China and Japan where it provided the base for the development of what is now known as Feng Shui.

Vastu Shastra is the art and science of designing houses, offices, temples etc that swirl with good energy. Indian Maharajas and Moghul Emperors used Vastu Shastra when they built their symmetrical palaces, artificial lakes, and geometric courtyards that thirstily absorbed positive energy.

Like feng shui, Vastu Shastra is based on an octagon with the four directions being the anchors. Hindus believe that gods live in each of the quarters of the house, and govern the rooms, possessions, and activities in these locations.

Vasthu is an inherent energy concept of science. We cannot see energy with our naked eyes but we can realize and see its application in different forms and fashions. Vastu Shastra uses the forces of natural energies and aims to restore the balance between the home (the microcosm) and the cosmos (the macrocosm).

Vastu Shastra is not only a science, but is a bridge between man and nature, thus teaching us the Art of Living. Just like every subject of human aspect is governed with rules, regulations and acts, similarly the nature has also got certain key factor principles for smooth governing of its residents, in which Vastu Shastra stands for the law of natural energies.

Vastu, which literally means to live, works on the premise that the earth is a living organism, out of which other living organisms emerge. This life energy is known as Vaastu Purusha. The Vastu Shastra works for a bounded premise i.e., a house, building, industrial area or shop. The main aim is to form a balance between the outside atmosphere and the atmosphere within the premise. Vastu Shastra makes use of five elements – prithvi (earth), agni (fire), tej (light), vayu (wind) and akash (ether), the earth’s magnetic fields i.e. the north and the south pole and the sun’s rays.

History of Vastu Shastra

Vastu Shastra dates back to the times when the sages lived – probably 6,000 and 3,000 BC. The mention of Vastu Shastra can be found in ancient scriptures like the Rigveda, Atharvaveda, Ramayana, Mahabharata, Mayamatam, Manasa saar, etc. Ancient Indian architecture depended on this science for the building of almost all the palaces and temples. Although the exact origins of Feng Shui are debatable, it is thought to have originated about five thousand years ago. Scholars have recorded various aspects of Feng Shui as early as the Song Dynasty (960 BC). However, the basic principles of Feng Shui were first written down during the Han dynasty (25 AD).

How Vastu Shastra works

Vastu Shastra works on three principles of design that cover the entire premise. The first one is Bhogadyam, which says that the designed premise must be useful and lend itself to easy application. The second is Sukha Darsham, in which the designed premise must be aesthetically pleasing. The proportions of the spaces and the material used, in the interiors and exteriors of the building – ornamentation, colour, sizes of the windows, doors and the rooms and the rhythms of projection and depressions – should be beautiful. The third principle is Ramya, where the designed premise should evoke a feeling of well being in the user.

Also, Vastu Shastra is a complicated form of science put together by seventeen sages. There are certain rules that should be followed while building a house or a building. For instance, the building’s underground water tank or well should be situated in the northeast direction. But, if the building has an overhead tank then it should be placed in the southwest direction. Also, more space should be left to the north and the east of the building compound and less on the south and the west. Open space should be kept around the building and if the plot has a road on the east-north directions, it is better for the inhabitants.

Some short principles of Vastu Shastra

  • Indra, the god of gods, is positioned to the East. The East is where it all begins in Vastu Shastra. When people build their homes, the main door or the entrance is always facing the East. The eastern direction is the harbinger of good luck, which comes into the house through the door.
  • Kubera, the god of wealth, resides in the north. In this location some symbolic valuables should be placed to attract wealth.
  • The Northeast is the position for Dharma, the god of righteousness. In Vastu Shastra, this is the place for worship, meditation and introspection.
  • Agni, the god of fire, lives in the southeast corner. This should be the place of the kitchen.
  • Yama, the god of death, resides in the South. He prevents the evil eye from taking control of our lives. In India, people put a ghoulish pumpkin mask, similar to Halloween masks, in Yama’s position to ward off the evil eye.
  • Niruthi, who prevents homes from being robbed, dwells in the southwest corner.

Vastu for Pooja Room in Home for Positive Energy

Vastu for Pooja Room in Home for Positive Energy

In the present times, Vastu Shastra is the most commonly used term, especially when it comes to purchasing or constructing a new home. To have a happy and prosperous household you must lay stress on enhancing the positive energy inside your home. Vastu Shastra increases wealth, well being and prosperity if you live in structures that allow positive cosmic forces.

One of the most important and sacred corner in any home is a zone of tranquility, the prayer or meditation area; usually known as ‘Pooja Ghar’. Although placement of a Puja Ghar itself brings positive energies in a home, but designing this sacred place as per Vastu guidance enhances positivity in the environment all around. According to Vastu Shastra, the North East zone or the Eeshan (Ishan) corner of a house is the best suited area for placing the Puja room.

It is believed that when Vastu Purush was brought down to the earth, his head laid in the north-east direction. So, while worshipping in this direction along with coming closer to the deity, we also pay obeisance to him. The direction also receives the purifying rays of the rising sun, which purifies the environment and brings positivity and prosperity into our homes.

Follow the below mentioned attributes in order to get an ideal Puja room:

  • Never locate the Puja room in the south and the south-east, as these directions are ruled by Yama and Agni, respectively.
  • Never locate the Puja space in the bedroom, as this place is for rest and pleasure. However if there is no choice, locate it in the north-east corner of the room. Take care that your feet do not point towards this corner while lying on the bed.
  • Avoid locating the toilet above, below or opposite to this room to prevent the negative energies of the toilet from spoiling the auspicious atmosphere of the Puja room.
  • This room should also not be constructed next to the kitchen or located under a staircase. In case you do make the Puja space in the kitchen, keep the deity in such a way that you face east while praying.
  • In very big plots, factories or apartments, the prayer room can be located in the centre or the Brahmasthana, the sector governed by Lord Brahma, the Creator.
  • Make the roof of the Puja room dome or pyramid-shaped. This facilitates smooth flow of positive energies from the tip to the dome or pyramid into the puja room. This shape also assists in meditation.
  • Use tranquil colours on the walls of the Puja room like white, soft shades of yellow, blue or violet. These colours do not distract while praying.
  • Ideally, the doors and windows of this room should open towards the east or north. These should be made of good quality wood and have double shutters.
  • Although north-east is generally the direction recommended for locating the idols or pictures of various Gods; yet different deities have different auspicious locations as described:
    • Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh, Kartikeya, Indra and Surya are placed in the east and facing towards west.
    • Ganesh, Durga, Kuber, Shodas Matrika and Bhairav in the north direction and facing south.
    • Hanuman in the north-east facing south-west, but never in the south-east as it creates fire hazard.
  • Never keep idols brought from ancient temples in the puja room. Also avoid Shrichakra and Shaligram idols, unless you have tremendous spiritual control and are capable of performing puja in a traditional manner.
  • Never display photographs of the dead family members along with the deities.
  • The height of idols should not be more than 18 inches and should always be placed on a high platform or singhasan.
  • Keep the holy books or dharmic granths and other items of samagri and dresses of the deities along the west and south wall.
  • The lamp or deepak should be placed in the south-east direction, governed by Agni.
  • The Puja room should not be used for other purposes, like storing items that do not belong here. It should also not be used for sleeping purposes or to conceal money and other valuables.
  • Never keep a dustbin in the Puja room, as the positive energy gets diminished due to the negative energies emitted by it.
  • If you ensure the above mentioned points, you would not only add to the serenity of the room, but would also find yourself spiritually uplifted with increased powers of meditation.

Importance of Door position in Vastu shastra

Importance of Door position in Vastu shastra

First the length of the wall should be measured; its length should be divided into two equal parts. The door should be fixed a little bit nearer towards the northern side from the centre of the wall, as the southern side is not a prosperous one. Similarly the door should be fixed a little bit nearer towards the eastern side from the centre of the wall, as the western side is not a prosperous one.

All the doors fixed in the parallel walls should be in the same line.

Extended sides and diminished sides of sites and their consequences:

  1. A site which has its south-east and south-west sides extended yields bad results. People who live in such houses may become ill and may make enemies.
  2. If the south-east corner and the north-west corners are extended, the dwellers will face many negative consequences such as fire related accidents, thefts or debts etc.
  3. If the south-east and the north-east corners are extended, they may have to spend huge sums of money and incur losses.
  4. A site that has its sides extended on the north-east and the south-west may lead to mental agony and spending huge amounts of money.
  5. A site that has its sides extended on the north-east and north-west may yield to good results such as enhancement of riches, but often result in family disputes etc.
  6. A site that has its north-eastern slightly extended than its south-east may prosper well in life but this growth on the north should be very limited.
  7. If the north-east side of a site gets extended than its north-west, the dwellers of the house prosper and they become politically shrewd.
  8. If the south-west and the north-west sides are extended, the dwellers are prone to many problems, diseases, imprisonment etc.

Vastu Doors: Places of the Doors and Windows

A house can have the doors on all sides. A house needs doors, windows, shelves and ventilators. These things should be in even number. The house-owner should avoid round figures having a zero such as the numbers 10, 20, 30 etc. The door is to be kept opposite to another door. A house should not have three doors. The south-western side of the house is considered to be the mean sides and the north and the eastern sides are considered to be the good sides.

Each room should have the doors on Eastern and Northern sides. To fix the doors, wo have to measure the length of the wall and note the Centro of the wall and fix the door. Each room has two sides mean side and good side. Here is an example:

Big doors and big windows are to be fixed on the southern and western sides.

Importance of Door position in Vastu shastra

Small doors and small windows arc to be fixed on the eastern and the northern sides. The level under the threshold on the southern and the western sides should be over and above that of the eastern and northern sides. The level of the floor inside the rooms should be comparatively low and water should go out through the north-east corner. While fixing the doors and windows, we have to take necessary/ precautions so that the edges of the walls of the other houses and the roofs of the thatched and tiled houses should not be in their direction. Doors should not be fixed so that they face the roads coming in opposite direction. If the roads come in opposite direction and face the door, the house may yield to negative results.

Eastern Simhadwara (Main Door) in Vastu Shastra

The house which has its main door on the eastern side is the house with eastern simhadwara (the main door).

Such a house should have minimum possible extent of site on its southern and western sides. The house may have its verandahs on south and west. There should be adequate height on the southern and the western sides. The level should be comparatively lower its eastern and northern sides.

The water-level should be lower on the eastern and the northern sides. The owner should have verandahs on the north and the east. The eastern verandah should be lower in height.

The house with eastern simhadwara should have its staircase on the south-east or the south-west Or the north-west corner. It should not be on the north- east corner.

Southern Simhadwara (Main Door) in Vastu Shastra

The house that has its simhadwara on its southern side is a house with southern simhadwara.

Such a house is to be built leaving the minimum extent of site on its southern side and leaving so many sites on the northern side. It is better to have verandahs on its northern side. The movement of water inside the house should lead to its north-eastern corner, if the house has so much of site on the north, it yields good results and the family prospers. The staircase again should be on the south-east corner or on the south-west corner or on the north-west corner also.

Importance of Door position in Vastu shastra

Western Simhadwara (Main Door) in Vastu Shastra

The house that has its main door on the western side is the house with the western simhadwara. To build such a house, we should not leave much space-on the western side. If the owner leaves- much space-on the western side, he may incur huge financial losses, he may undergo mental agony etc. He may face the danger of becoming iH and may die a premature death The water level inside the house should point to the north-east corner. The owner should leave space to the maximum extent possible in north and east. The stair-case may be on the southern or the western side.

North Simliadwara (Main Door) in Vastu Shastra

The house which has its simhadwara on its northern side is the house with north simhadwara.

To build such a house, the owner should not leave much space on the western and the southern sides. He should leave the space to the maximum extent possible on the north. He can have verandahs on the northern side. The water flow should lead to the north-east corner. The house should not completely be closed on its northern side. There may be so much of open space on the eastern side of the house. The stair case should be on the south west or on the north-west.

South-East Cornered Simhadwara in Vastu Shastra

Some people build houses keeping the main door on the south-east corner of the house. In such cases, the dwellers of the house are prone to several troubles including huge financial losses, fire accidents, thefts etc, They may take to gambling, prostitution etc.
